FIFA 14 – Custom Tactics guide

FIFA 14′s Custom Tactics are designed to change the way a team plays. Be it with greater pace, higher pressing, or a snatch-and-grab approach against a better opponent, knowing which tactics to use is an important aspect that most players tend to overlook.

Sportra will provide you with a breakdown of each tactic in detail. How you should play according to each strategy, and what you should see on the pitch.

Counter Attack

Build Up Play

Speed – 95
Passing – 50
Positioning – Free Form

Chance Creation

Passing – 50
Crossing – 50
Shooting – 50
Positioning – Free Form

Defence

Pressure – 10
Aggression – 50
Team Width – 60
Defender Line – Offside Trap

Counter attack relies on your ability to maintain your discipline whilst defending, preventing the opponent from finishing their attack with a shot at goal by stealing possession and attacking quickly in numbers.

By selecting counter attack, you are essentially conceding that your opponent will have most of the possession. With little pressure on the ball, you will be inviting attacks at your goal, defending deep with all ten outfield players behind the ball. Tackles and interceptions are vital for this tactic to work. Attacks from goal-kicks and set-plays aren’t as effective. You need to attack an opponent after they have committed men forward, leaving them vulnerable defensively. Quick breaks while your opponent scrambles to get back is the main focus of this tactic.

The even spread of chance creation means you won’t be reliant on one form of attack; you can hit an opponent from the wing or through the middle with all your attacking players moving freely among the different positions. The most important point is that the speed of the attack is maintained. Allowing your opponent to get his defenders back into position will nullify the chance.

High Pressure

Build Up Play

Speed - 50
Passing – 50
Positioning – Free Form

Chance Creation

PassingĀ - 75 (Risky)
Crossing – 50
Shooting – 75 (Lots)
Positioning – Free Form

Defence

Pressure – 85 (High)
Aggression – 75 (Double)
Team Width – 25
Defender Line – Cover

This is the Barcelona style of football. Barca press teams very high up the pitch in an attempt to force defenders to make a mistake on the ball and win possession in dangerous areas. It requires a team with high fitness stats, as it takes a lot of running and speed in order to be effective.

The very narrow defending means you need big players, especially at centre back. You’re allowing opponents to attack on the wings more than in other tactics, so this isn’t the best option if they have a dominant striker.

The emphasis on risky passing and a high frequency of shooting is predicated on winning the ball in an advantageous situation where there are pockets of space to exploit defenders trying to get back into position. It is similar to the counter attack mentality, though you are looking to win the ball further up the pitch, thus the speed of build up play is lower.

This one is best used when you consider yourself a superior team to your opponent. Wearing your team down by keeping the ball and having them chase it for long stretches of the game, waiting for your opponent to over-commit and make a mistake is the key.

This is best highlighted by the classic Arsenal team of the 90s, who dominated teams by keeping the ball for large portions of a match, exhausting them by the 70th minute, then hitting them with fast-paced attacks for the final spell, grabbing a couple of goals.

The offside trap is a risky tactic, especially if your opponent has pacey wingers and forwards. With the emphasis in FIFA 14 on lobbed through balls, it may be worth changing this to cover, as passes in behind the line of defence are too easy in this year’s game.

I made a video that can help people who don’t know how to create custom tactics:

I’m going to try these settings out! I always used the default ones, started using the customs (they screwed up my game a little bit) and now I just seem to go back to the defaults. I know there is a lot of room for improvement thanks mate
